5th Dimension

The installation is inspired by the physical concept of scale-dependence, where the complexity of observed phenomena depends on the observer's distance from the observed. The observed world is four-dimensional, comprising three dimensions of space and one dimension of time. Certain physical phenomena, however, cannot be explained scientifically using these four dimensions alone. Therefore, physicists have proposed theories that stipulate extra dimensions to construct adequate models of reality.

This raises the question of how to visually represent these extra dimensions. For example, a line can represent one dimension, a plane two dimensions, and a cube three dimensions. Even four dimensions can be visually represented, as seen below.

But what kind of geometric shape can represent five dimensions? One idea, inspired by the physical concept of scale-dependence, is to take into account the role of the observer. Suppose we have a screen and an observer in a default position. From that default point of view, the observer perceives “reality” in four dimensions. However, as the observer moves closer to the screen, more and more complexity becomes visible.

My idea was to design an installation that provides the audience with an intuitive understanding of scale-dependence.
